Beyond Risk Appetite

When Measuring Risk Does Not Mean Understanding Risk.

Most organisations have invested heavily in risk management. Frameworks, registers, dashboards, and appetite statements are all in place. Yet significant failures continue to occur. Cyber breaches. Fraud. Insider incidents. Reputational damage.

This article asks an uncomfortable question: is the problem not the effort being invested in risk management, but where that effort is directed?

This article examines:

  • Why risk appetite assumes something organisations are finding harder to sustain, that we understand the risks we actually face.

  • How identifying and measuring risks is not the same as understanding the conditions that make harm possible.

  • Why likelihood is the wrong lens, and consequence should determine where leaders focus their attention

  • What the exposure lens reveals that risk registers and dashboards often cannot.

A question every leader should ask: Before deciding how much risk your organisation is willing to accept, do you genuinely understand what it is already exposed to?
