Recognising Early Concerning Behaviours

This is a one-day masterclass designed to equip security analysts, HR, risk, and operational leaders with the frameworks and techniques needed to detect insider threat through behavioural and human signals, identify risk earlier than technical systems can, and interpret ambiguous patterns with discipline and confidence.

About

Most insider threat incidents arrive with quiet signals that no one is equipped to read. The question is rarely whether those signals were present. It almost always turns out they were. The question is whether the right people had the frameworks, the language, and the confidence to act on what they were seeing.

Recognising Concerning Behaviours Early is a one-day workshop built around that premise. Grounded in behavioural science, practitioner experience, and real-world case architecture, it equips participants to identify the early indicators of escalating risk, understand the psychological and organisational dynamics driving them, and take calibrated, confident action, before harm occurs.

A human capability program, not a surveillance program. This distinction is one of the central pillars the day is built around. The skills developed here make participants better at reading people, not better at monitoring them and that difference shapes every element of the design.

Objectives

By the close of the masterclass, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the behavioural, linguistic, and relational signals that precede insider threat incidents, including those that operate below the threshold of conventional HR monitoring

  • Distinguish between normal workplace stress responses and patterns that warrant structured attention and escalation

  • Apply a practical framework for documenting observations, assessing risk level, and determining when and how to act

  • Conduct early intervention conversations with confidence without triggering defensiveness, escalating the situation, or creating legal exposure.

  • Understand the organisational conditions that either surface these signals early or suppress them, and recognise which environment they are operating in

Topics Covered

The Invisible Escalation

How insider threat builds over time. The psychology of slow-burn grievance, the illusion of stability, and why silence is not the same as safety.

Reading the Behavioural Baseline

What normal looks like and how to identify meaningful drift. The difference between reactive incident response and proactive pattern monitoring.

The Three Signal Layers

Behavioural indicators, language patterns, and relational shifts and how they compound into a picture that warrants action long before a formal incident.

Identity Disruption as a Risk Event

Why restructures, demotions, and role changes are psychological events as much as operational ones and the predictable risk window they create.

The Culture of Silence

Why people don't report what they see and what organisations can do to create reporting environments that function without becoming surveillance cultures.

The First Conversation

How to engage a person of concern without triggering, escalating, or compromising the process. The language, the structure, and the self-awareness required.

When and How to Escalate

A practical decision framework what to document, who to involve, and how to move from observation to action with confidence and legal grounding.

Benefits

Participants leave this day with more than insight. They leave with capability.

  • A Behavioural Baseline Framework - Applicable immediately in their current role, structured around the specific environments and relationships they work within

  • A Signal Library - A structured reference for the early indicators of escalating concern, organised by category and risk level

  • A First Conversation Guide - Language templates and a structural framework for engaging with someone whose behaviour has shifted

  • An Escalation Decision Matrix - A clear, defensible process for determining when concern becomes action

  • Ongoing access to AIIT practitioner resources - Relevant to their role and sector

More than any of these: Participants leave having developed a capability they will use for the rest of their professional lives. The ability to see earlier is not a workshop outcome. It is a permanent shift in how you read a room.

Who Should Attend

This masterclass is designed for practitioners, not theorists. It is most valuable for people who carry genuine responsibility for others and who want to be better equipped to act on what they already sense but may not yet have the language or frameworks to name.

  • HR leaders and business partners - Responsible for performance management, workforce risk, and people-related investigations

  • Security and risk professionals - Building or maturing an insider threat program

  • Front-line and senior managers - Who are closest to the people most likely to present early signals

  • Legal and compliance professionals - Involved in workplace investigations or conduct processes.

  • Insurance and claims professionals - Assessing workplace psychological and conduct-related exposures

  • Recruitment and workforce placement professionals - Responsible for selection decisions and for spotting risk indicators before the hire is made

Prerequisite

No prior training in insider threat, behavioural analysis, or security is required. What is required is a genuine responsibility for people and a willingness to look clearly at what that responsibility actually demands
